Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Fire So Long As England's Star Sets Aside His Ego Outside.

One snub was enough. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from the England manager, who is much too clever not to realize that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require the involvement of the talented midfielder, even if it is also up to the player to blend into the strategic frameworks and team pecking order necessary with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.

The manager wants Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is a matter of channeling it constructively. Individual quality is important but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a cost when stardom takes over. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.

Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after being left out of the previous squad. He watched England book their place at the upcoming World Cup without him. He watched Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel mention loving the team's dynamism and values. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in champion style, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against Barcelona and the Italian side. He had to be picked; another omission would have put his tournament chances in serious doubt.

The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham concentrating on intimidating opponents rather than his own colleagues. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has demonstrated that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the 22-year-old after proving that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.

“There is no problem with him, and no concern with the character,” the German commented. “Bellingham just has a competitive streak. You need a certain edge to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone need to support him and establish a setting which he can channel that intensity against rivals and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”

The star dominated most of the attention at the team news conference for the upcoming final group games versus Serbia and the other. Any other news? Well, how about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious No 10 in need of support and direction. He has been absent for the national team since spring and has struggled to hit the heights this year but Tuchel could not ignore the 25-year-old after his performance in Manchester City’s win against Borussia Dortmund this week.

The issue, however, is how to use the various creators at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to pick another youngster once he recovers from a persistent groin problem. Is selecting five No 10s to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, restricting Harry Kane’s style as a result.

It seems unlikely the current manager repeating that if it harms the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who must play through the middle. The coach wants him near Kane. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “Phil is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I have this idea regarding him for a long time. I think it fits his style the most.”

He agreed there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an England shirt. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then clearly something is not right, whether it's the position, the environment, I don’t know.

“I think he is additionally so used to representing Man City in a specific system, with a clear task. I think he profits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defensive duties?”

The manager discussed one star making runs for tap-ins and the other drilling in goals from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is recognized for his good displays for City at left-back. Interest abounds.

The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, he hinted at deploying the playmaker as a false 9 versus one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options if Kane be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to get Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter setting up Kane to score in an international match against Scotland in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the duo combined for a score. Tuchel will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is missing.

“At this point eventually it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” he stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a sense of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be assured to start versus the upcoming opponents. The manager wants Bellingham committed but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside the ego outside. Doing so could turn a powerful squad into an more effective one.
