A photographer who documented the results of an extensive law enforcement action in the Brazilian city has described how residents brought back mutilated bodies of those who had died.

The bodies "kept coming: the count kept increasing", the photographer reported. The total contained those of police officers.

One of the bodies was discovered headless - others were "completely mutilated", he reported. Many also had evidence of blade trauma.
