Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Inclusion in English Ashes Team

The English team has opted for a 12-man squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected place.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions suit four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.

The other seamers round out the attack, with the latter expected to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.

Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers

Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged five previous Tests.

During these games, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.

At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers remains the probable choice.

Alternative Choices Weighed

There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to provide some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the lower order.

However the coach has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.

Earlier, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”

“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they perform and excel out here.”
