The 2026 cars are set to be smaller, nimbler and more environmentally friendly compared to current models.

The world of Formula 1 has introduced the simplified terminology that will be used to reference the technical complexities of its new 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is implementing what is considered the biggest rules overhaul in its long history starting in 2026, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the required adoption of fully sustainable fuels.

The revised engines, which retain the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a greatly enhanced battery power, necessitating significant developments in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

Throughout races, drivers will strategically manage electrical energy – potentially on hot laps – to secure the best result.

Wide-ranging research were carried out with a wide range of fans, including long-time followers and newcomers, to determine which terms would aid comprehension of the central aspects of the new regulations.

The key objective was to make a series of complex technical aspects of the racing as accessible as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, initial designations for some systems – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in favour of straightforward terms that directly explain the actual function of the innovation.

What's the New Technology?

According to rule-makers that drivers will have greater control to make decisions regarding power usage, regeneration, and saving energy.

The new regulations feature a set of functions that will be shown on television graphics to improve the fans' insight of the strategic duel.

  • Passing Mode: This supersedes the present overtaking aid. It provides a surge of additional ERS power available when a competitor is close behind the car ahead to execute an overtake.
  • Power Mode: This is a driver-operated power boost from the hybrid system that can be deployed for attack or defence. It provides the driver maximum power at the click of a switch.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be managed carefully, as the overall battery capacity is strictly limited.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the nose and rear wings adjust their angles – flattening on the long straight sections for low aerodynamic resistance and higher speed, and closing in the bends for peak grip.
  • Energy Harvesting: Drivers can replenish their battery with regenerative braking, or during throttle lift at the conclusion of a straight or in corners where only limited engine output is used.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The 2026 cars will be reduced in size and weight relative to current models, with a wheelbase reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight lowered by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 15-30%, although squads will undoubtedly recover some as they refine their designs.

Air resistance has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will utilize moveable wing elements – both wings will move on the straight sections to improve speed and increase straightline speed and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will continue to use 18-inch rims, but the tyres themselves will be reduced in width, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30mm at the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The revised hybrid units will have an near-equal balance in power produced by the internal combustion engine and the battery and motor, increasing from about 20% battery contribution this year.

The ERS setup is streamlined through the elimination of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the sophisticated and pricey component that harvested power from the exhaust turbo.

Cars will be mandated to operate on 100% sustainable fuel, produced using plant-based materials or synthetic production methods.
