Larian Studios Explains Its Application of AI Tools for Next Project

The team behind hit role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently unveiled its next major project, generating a wave of excitement within the industry. However, subsequent statements from the studio's figurehead have introduced clarity to the narrative, focusing on the developer's stance toward AI tools.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a new message, Larian's director explained that the company is utilizing generative AI for certain preliminary purposes. These involve enhancing presentation materials, creating initial visual ideas, and drafting temporary dialogue.

Importantly, Vincke stressed that the final content in the game will be created entirely by actual creatives. "Our team is developing every line in-house," he stated.

Our studio is constantly expanding our team of concept artists and are busily putting together narrative groups.

Given that visual development is being particularly referenced — we presently have over twenty artistic staff and have job openings for more creatives.

Each initiative we do is incremental and designed to having people spend greater focus on making content.

Every ML tool used well is supplementary to a creative team workflow, not a substitute for their craft.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The revelation of AI usage originally sparked unease among some the community. In reaction, Vincke offered additional detail on social media.

"Our team utilizes these tools to explore references, similar to we use the internet and physical media," he wrote. "In the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a basic framework for structure which we then substitute with original concept art."

He continued, "Larian brings on artists for their unique talent, not for their ability to replicate what a AI generates."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had earlier outlined the studio's focused strategy to AI and ML, defining its use into three main functions:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: This includes refining animations, voice editing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to rapidly prototype basic versions of mechanics to validate concepts ahead of full development.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Investigating how AI could in the future enhance new forms of reactivity, specifically in managing player-driven narratives in a complex RPG.

He clearly noted that key artistic disciplines — such as writing — are are in no way areas where the company is replacing artistic input. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these very positions.

"Larian is neither launching a game with machine-made assets, and we are certainly not planning on cutting teams to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
