Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Earn Initial Wins After Recent Arrests
Miami put up 86 first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat claimed a overwhelming 146-114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA game since guard Rozier was arrested for suspected unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested as part of a broad federal probe into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.
However, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six opening half scores to be ahead of Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and later said Rozier had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through this."
Portland also secured their first game since the arrests, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the team to a convincing 139 to 119 victory over the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Tiago remarked. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner further mentioned an league probe into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.
"So, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an charge.
"And two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in justice to Terry.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
