The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
