European Cup Fixtures This Evening: Marseille v Newcastle & Additional Games
Greetings to a fresh evening of thrilling European Cup soccer. Nine games are planned for this evening, featuring 3 English teams in play. Chelsea meet Barça in the marquee fixture of the evening, while The Magpies visit the French side and City host Leverkusen.
Current Standings
We're at the halfway point of the league stage, so the standings is taking form. All six English sides are presently in the upper twelve, but there are only two pts between fifth and sixteenth position, thus there's a sense of snakes and ladders about the entire situation. Everything is to play for.

Historical Context
The only previous meeting involving Marseille and Newcastle was the Europa League semi-final of 2004, won by an emerging superstar from Côte d'Ivoire. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have not faced each other previously. Barcelona and Chelsea have some past encounters.
Early Match Updates
Only a single goal during the opening period of the two early games. Dahl's sixth-minute goal has given Benfica under Mourinho a 1-0 lead at the Dutch side.
Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille
Even though Newcastle traveled to the French south fresh from their restorative two-one home English top-flight victory against City on the weekend, and having defeated Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica and Bilbao in the Champions League, their only away win since early April came in Brussels at Union Saint-Gilloise.
It's not that Howe was eager to talk about the psychological aspect of this away form issue. “The Champions League is different to Premier League games,” said the manager, whose team are sixth in the European table, with 9 points from a possible 12 and direct progression to the last 16 nearly secured. “I am not sure if you can compare them.”
A dedicated live feed is available for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Scott Murray, the minute-by-minute equivalent of Maradona is on duty for that.
