Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
