A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The explosion took place as police and firefighters entered the house close to Verona to carry out an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

The three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman got detained at the site and another man who escaped after the explosion was apprehended soon after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The blast could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the location showed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to debts incurred by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member caused the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our officers,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the site, the minister confirmed.

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official thought the detonation had happened on a floor above the access point and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he said officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being activated”.

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to reporters, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
