The government has presented the branding for the new national rail body, representing a significant stride in its plans to bring the railways back into state hands.

A Patriotic Palette and Iconic Emblem

The new design incorporates a red, white and blue design to mirror the Union Flag and will be rolled out on GBR trains, at stations, and across its digital platforms.

Significantly, the symbol is the distinctive twin-arrow design currently used by the national rail network and originally introduced in the mid-20th century for the former state operator.

A Implementation Plan

The phased introduction of the design, which was developed in-house, is expected to take place in phases.

Commuters are set to begin noticing the freshly-liveried trains throughout the network from spring next year.

During the month of December, the design will be exhibited at major railway stations, such as Glasgow Central.

The Path to Renationalisation

The Railways Bill, which will enable the creation of GBR, is presently making its way through the Parliament.

The government has stated it is renationalising the railways so the system is "owned by the people, operating for the people, not for private shareholders."

GBR will unify the running of passenger trains and tracks and signals under a unified structure.

The government has said it will unify 17 different organisations and "eliminate the notorious red tape and poor accountability that has long affected the railways."

App-Based Services and Existing Ownership

The launch of GBR will also include a new app, which will enable users to see schedules and purchase tickets free from surcharges.

Accessibility travellers will also be have the option to use the app to book support.

A number of franchises had previously been nationalised under the outgoing government, including Southeastern.

There are currently 7 train operators already in state ownership, representing about a third of journeys.

In the past year, South Western Railway have been brought into public ownership, with more likely to follow in the coming years.

Ministerial and Industry Comments

"The new design is not simply a paint job," commented the Transport Secretary. It symbolises "a fresh start, leaving behind the problems of the past and dedicated entirely on delivering a proper service for the public."

Industry representatives have responded positively to the government's commitment to enhancing services.

"The industry will continue to work closely with relevant bodies to facilitate a seamless changeover to GBR," a senior figure noted.
